چکیده

It is well known that a single Leaky Bucket cannot control all characteristics of a source. Especially, controlling burst length and mean rate may be incompatible, while a poor control of any of these characteristics impacts directly networks performances. Given an ATM source, this paper addresses this issue and gives a general approach to choose the \best" Leaky Bucket parameters; the optimality criterion is the number of worst-case sources which the network can accomodate while ensuring the required Quality of Service.

It is a critical issue in network dimensioning that the characterization of traffic at the call level should be accurate enough to provide the designer with reliable tools for dimensioning the transmission and switching capacities. Since in B-ISDN the nature of traffic is expected to be very different from traditional telephone traffic with much more complex features, therefore, new methods are...

On the Impact of Long-Range-Dependent Traffic in Dimensioning ATM Network Buffer

Recent measurements of packet networks have shown that packet traffic exhibits long-range-dependent property. Studies have also discovered that this property is not adequately captured by the conventional Markov traffic models and often yields queueing behavior such as heavy-tailed or subexponential queue length distribution. These findings have led to the implication that long-range-dependent ...

Buffer and bandwidth allocation for TCP data traffic: experimental results

This paper discusses the dimensioning of buffers and the bandwidth allocation for data traffic in the ATM network. Data traffic is notoriously complex and bursty, making such dimensioning a difficult task. However, the COMBINE project, when dimensioning their interworking units (IWUs), adopted a Poissonian packet arrival model, based upon the argument that burstiness at timescales higher than t...

Dimensioning ATM Networks with Uncertain Traffic Demands

We consider a network planning method that takes into consideration the uncertainties associated with offered traffics when dimensioning ATM networks for prescribed grades of service. Assuming that each reference traffic stream offered between a pair of nodes in a network can only be specified within a lower and upper bound, together with a best guess value, we demonstrate a method for transfor...

Dimensioning and Resource Management of ATM Networks

This paper addresses the dimensioning and resource management of ATM networks. We show the importance of the effective bandwidth approximation and of the virtual path concept and explain how dimensioning and resource management problems are formulated and what are the related issues (routing, admission control, survivability and traffic variability). We conclude by giving two examples of dimens...
